Thanks to my pals over at Sad Mans Tongue for turning me onto this very, very cool project! Where We Danced: The Story of American Social Dance is an independent documentary by Brian Lucky Skillen that shines light on the historical dance culture of African Americans and you can help get the film produced by donating at the movie’s Kickstarter page.
In the filmmaker’s own words:
The Feature documentary Where We Danced is the story of America’s dance told through the lives of the dancers who shaped the art form as well as the places they danced…Over the decades dance has set trends in fashion and sexuality, giving the youth of the 20th century a voice to define itself from the rigidness of the Victorian era . It also gave African Americans a means of expression when all others had been taken away.
The page also includes a nice video introduction that gives a very good sense of what the movie’s about and the quality work that’s going into making it. Head over to Kickstarter and support the project–it looks like it’s going to be wonderful!

If the movie is even REMOTELY as vibrant and intriguing as the opening video, I’ll be first in line for the premier!
It looks great, doesn’t it?
